Earlier this month, a good friend of mine posted on her WhatsApp status words to the effect that Philippians 4 was her challenge for 2024.
I went to the chapter to take a look and remind myself what it says.
Immediately, I was saying, “yep, yep, yep”.
Ordinarily, that would be it. I would write it down in my journal and tell myself to remember it and I probably would not see it again until next year perhaps.
But since my God has so graciously shown me this method of scripture memory, I set about putting it to song.
Sway & Say Weekly
This is the first edition of Sway & Say Weekly.
My goal is to send a song EVERY TUESDAY in 2024!
This week is Philippians 4:4-7.
4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Next week, God’s willing, we close out the chapter with verses 8-9.
Keep singing
I can’t stress enough how great it is to sing God’s word!
I’m posting my daughter Madison singing as well to keep encouraging parents who read this and who, like me, 1) want to teach their kids the word, but 2) don’t have the discipline to do it in more structured ways.
Keep going. keep singing.
Their brains are fresher than ours. They can absorb much more than we imagine.
What to expect from Sway & Say Weekly
Deciding what to memorize is not easy.
In this period of my life where I’m basically building my scripture memory store from scratch, I want to focus on what I call the foundations.
I call them foundations because I find them to be essential to persevering in faith. We always need to go back to them!
So far I have started or completed drafts for:
Hebrews 11 (Faith)
Hebrews 12:1-4 (Running)
2 Peter 1:1-11 (Growth)
Exodus 20 (The 10 Commandments)
Isaiah 53 (Christ)
Romans 5 - 8 (Salvation)
Psalms (1, 18, 19:1-6, 19:7-11, 20, 34, 46, 49)
Matthew 5 - 7 (The Sermon on the Mount)
Ephesians 6:10-20 (The Armour)
Isaiah 40:6-8, 12-31 (The word of God)
I share this list for two reasons:
that you can be as excited as I am!
and that in your excitement and happiness, you will pray for God’s grace upon me to stick with it, and for these songs (and more importantly, God’s word) to be the blessing they are intended to be.
Help me share this song
If you love the work, please share the songs with whoever you think may like this sort of music and may benefit from this work.
There’s a lot of things you can do to help. I will be sending out a more detailed post on this later.
Until then, God bless! And REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS!
Philippians 4:5–6: 5 Let your reasonableness (gentleness) be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything...
"The Lord is at hand." Powerful argument when you look on it. And based on how you structure the song it sounds more like an argument for the preceding statement; Let your reasonableness (gentleness) be known to everyone, for/because the Lord is at hand.
But based on the ESV* punctuations it seems like an argument for the subsequent statement; The Lord is at hand, therefore do not be anxious about anything...
Worthy of contemplation
